School of Fishes
School of Fishes is swim lessons with a unique format – much of the lessons are done through
games and other fun activities.

“Fish” must be tall enough to stand in the pool and it is recommended that they be three years
or older.  All fish must be registered  with the swim team.  The fee is $45.00 for about six weeks
of lessons.  Classes normally start about the first week in June, depending upon the weather
and water temperature.

Miss Donna (Burt), who has taught at Fontainebleau since 1972, and her helpers are all
volunteers.  The registration fee is used for supplies, rewards and the operation of the swim
team.  Each child receives daily rewards of goldfish crackers, stars and stickers.  The children
receive t-shirts and other rewards at the party at the end of the lesson season if they attend at
least on a semi-regular basis.

Day sessions are held from 11 AM to noon every day.
Evening sessions are at 6 PM on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.

We recommend the day sessions if at all possible.  Children are happier at that time of day!
Children may switch back and forth between sessions as their schedules demand.

Just a little about how we work –

Each child is treated as an individual – goals and rewards are based on each child’s ability and
desire.  No child is forced to do what he/she does not want to do (although I may tell them I
know that they can do something even if they don’t know it.  Goldfish crackers are given for each
attempt and stars are awarded for goals reached.  Certificates are given when a child first
swims any distance, when the child swims across the pool and when the child swims the
length of the pool.  The coveted award is “Oscar the Alligator” given when the child swims the
length of the pool without stopping.   We have a little ceremony at the end of each lesson – stars
on the chart, stickers on the hand and a fish drawing on the hand.

Most of the instruction is done through games – under the bridge, through the tunnel, shark
attack are just some of things your child will talk about.  I’ll be happy to explain them to you –
your child will want you to play, too!

We concentrate on getting children to swim any way they can.  Form is not important.  Pre-
schoolers do not have the coordination to swim with the form of older children.  Once the child
makes it across the pool, we try to improve form, but coordination will come with age and
maturity.  We use patterning to help get the feel of correct kicks and arm movements, but please
do not worry about how they look – they will improve.

Strict water safety rules are taught and enforced.  Children are expected to sit on the side of the
pool until instructed to enter the water.  The children are not allowed past the first safety line (or
volleyball net) without an instructor until the can swim across the pool without putting a foot
down.

The classes may seem large at times – we have several teenage instructors in addition to Miss
Donna.  We allow the children to rest between attempts at what we are doing.  They tire easily.
They also learn from the peer pressure of watching others go underwater, try to swim, etc.  Our
motto during class is “I think I can, I think I can”.  We do not say “can’t” in class.

We do not mind if you stay at the pool during fish school, but your child will do much  better if
he/she does not see you.  If you do stay, please sit away from the edge of the pool – we try to
build independence as well as water skills.  You may be asked to be the “goldfish parent” or a
“bridge” – great honors as far as the children are concerned.

You may call or email
Miss Donna at 770-394-5573 if you have any questions.

Baby and Me Classes

Baby and Me is a class for parents and very young children – those too short to stand in the
pool and under three.  We will work on “getting ready to swim” as opposed to actual learning
strokes.  We want the child to be comfortable in the water and happy in the pool.    A parent
must be in the pool with the child at all times.  If a parent has two children, we will try to find a
helper to aid the second child.

General information:

Miss Donna (Burt) volunteers her time, as does any assistant she has.

All children must be registered and a fee of $45.00 paid  Classes last for about six weeks and
start around the first of June, depending on weather and water temperature.   The fee is used
for supplies, awards and to support the swim team.

Classes – or individual instruction – are available at noon Monday through Friday and at 5:30
on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Children are given goldfish crackers as rewards and stars on a chart after class and stickers
for their hands.  Please let me know if your child cannot (or doesn’t like) the crackers and we
will find another reward.

Do not expect your child to actually learn how to swim in the class – it is really a “getting ready
to swim” class.  We want your child to be comfortable in the water and enjoy water games, etc.
We will stress water safety throughout the class, but remember, children under three or too
short to stand in the pool safely should NEVER to in the pool without an adult in the water with
them.

You will learn about “boat rides”, how to encourage your child to go underwater, how to help
him/her jump to you, how to get your child to float and how to just have fun in the water.
