Update -2007-11-06
October has whizzed by and the Kabul weather improved as highs started to drop into the 70’s and now top out in the high 60’s to low 70’s.  It
has not rained in months, but it will start raining and get colder during November.  There was snow on the mountains above Kabul on 26
October, but it has mostly melted.  It will be there to stay later in November and will be there until next June.  It remains dusty and the pollution
from burning wood is starting to pick up

One of the highlights for October for me was having the Navy name my relief and tell me I am supposed to be headed to the states for out
processing by mid-April.

I did not travel as much in October other than up to Bagram for a meeting and down to an Afghan Army base in Gardez twice for meetings.  I
flew in H-60 Blackhawks to Bagram and once to Gardez and rode to Gardez one time.  The highlight of going to garrisons for me is getting to
run outside on the Afghan bases.  It was a cool morning in the 40’s, but I ran 7 miles.  The Afghan soldiers were out running in sweats, gloves
and balaclavas while I was out in shorts and a long sleeve shirt.  The elevation in Gardez is above 7,000 feet and the sun did not crest the
mountain for the first 40 minutes of my run so my hands were a little cold and I could tell I was working a little harder being another 1,500 feet
above Kabul.  The picture is an old Russian Mi-17.  The Soviet pilots still fly at very high altitudes probably based on their training to avoid
Stinger missiles when the USA was helping the Mujahedeen.

4 November I walked around the old 8th Soviet Infantry Division base on the outskirts of Kabul that will become the Afghan Defense University.
6 November I was in a leadership seminar for the Afghan Police and President Karzai made a speech.
I have continued to find time to run and have made it 16 weeks in a row of running 30 or more miles.  I still enjoy my Friday morning runs
outside and had to wear a light long sleeve shirt for the first time last Friday.

I no longer feel at all fast as I have a new Air Force Major who won our 5-loop Halloween 5k in a sub-18 minute time.  Unfortunately I had to
settle for my 7-mile run in Gardez that morning.  I also no long feel tall as I now have a 6’11” mountain of Lieutenant Commander who started
for the Naval Academy basketball team for three seasons.

I am looking forward to my mid-tour two weeks leave later in November and look forward to seeing family and friends and relaxing some.
When I return from leave I will be down to four chilly months left in Afghanistan.
Update- 2007-12-20
November was a blur and Christmas is upon us.  It was great to back in the states for two weeks and away from the routine for three weeks.
It was nice to catch up with friends and loved ones.  I was able to see my mother and all seven of my siblings.  The drop in that Charles and
Lori Cantey hosted was great.  I appreciated to opportunity to visit with the Fontainebleau crowd and was pleasantly surprised to see some
Scouters from Troop 477.  The support from Fontainebleau, my office in College Park and the Scout Troop has been tremendous.  Four days
at Fort Myers Beach was very enjoyable with temperatures in the 80’s each day the water was warm enough to wade in.  The trip included an
enjoyable day at Sanibel and Captiva, an afternoon of kayaking and manatee sightings, and a slow, 45:00 minute, 10k in Fort Myers on a
warm Saturday morning.

I have not traveled out of the Kabul area since returning as I have been busy catching up with staff work.  It has not been too burdensome as I
have a great staff of Navy, Army and Air Force folks in my directorate.  My Navy Commander deputy is starting to turn over before he departs in
January.  The Army Lieutenant Colonel Engineer has been here six months and will provide seamless continuity in this key position.  Having
been in similar roles I like to say that it is better to have a good deputy that to be a good deputy.

Work has slowed down slightly this week because many Afghans including our employees and the Afghan Government are on a 4-day
holiday called Eid that celebrates the remembrance of Abraham and the almost sacrifice of Isaac.  The current cold weather and rain is also
slowing things down. We have had a little snow with about 1/2 –inch accumulation, but other higher elevation areas are getting snow
regularly and the mountains visible from the camp are white.  We are also having a few holiday events. We had a command Christmas Party
featuring a military brass quintet that played carols and a pretty good arrangement of Bohemian Rhapsody.  A couple of USO shows are in the
area.  Robin Williams, Kid Rock, Lance Armstrong and Miss America will be at a few locations, but I do not expect to make any of their shows
in order to let younger service members go.  We will have a smaller USO group with Dallas Cheerleaders, singers and comedians do a short
visit to our camp and I plan to go to it.  I also plan to run a 5k Jingle Jog in camp.  The priest from the Italian Embassy will have Christmas
Mass.

My Friday morning runs outside are colder now as last week it started out below 30 degrees.  Lows are forecast between 10 and 15 degrees
for much of next week.  I will be ready for a week or so respite from the cold in Qatar in early January.  I have a meeting to attend and plan to
take a 4-day pass as part of my trip.  It should be good outside running weather on a good sized air base.  I am back clicking off 30 or more
miles a week and I am on track to run 1,500 miles in the year over here.
Update-2008-4
Joseph is home!
Update- 2008-2-2
The end of December and all of January have flown by.  I have about gotten used to the cold weather.  The cold is most noticeable if I am outside
for long periods at project sites. We have had snow on the ground since late December.  We are expecting more snow this week with several
nights of below 5 degrees F temperatures forecast.  I have not made my long Friday morning run for three weeks now.  I had a bad chest cold for
two Friday’s and am now nursing tendonitis in my right Achilles.

It was a nice break to travel to Qatar for 5 days in January.  The weather with highs in the 60’s and lows in the 50’s was a nice break even though
Doha received almost half of its 3 inches per year of rainfall while I was there.  It was nice to be able to run loops of the three mile perimeter and
go out into Doha some.  The only bad thing was stepping in a hole while running in the dark and rain that I think is the cause of my Achilles
problems.

Other than a few trips to see projects I made one day trip up to Mazar-E-Sharif in the north for a meeting.  I did make a cold visit to the future site of
the Afghan Defense University to meet with the Minister of Defense, a former warlord mentioned in Charlie Wilson’s War.

The northern and western parts of Afghanistan have had the heaviest snows in 30 years with several hundred deaths reported despite Afghan
government and international forces/organizations efforts to provide food and care to remote areas.

Work in the office remains busy even though construction in many areas has slowed due to winter weather.  We are busy getting work lined up to
start once areas thaw.

My relief should be here in less than six weeks and I hope to be back in Atlanta sometime between 15 and 20 April after out-processing in
Gulfport, MS.  The work days remain long, and the weeks zip by as I try to get many things done before I leave.
